Notes
General:
Private act of parliament: about 1717, changed his surname from Bubb to Dodington and signed his name "George Dodington", the same as his uncle and benefactor. This gave him the Dodington coat of arms, "Sable, three bugle-horns stringed argent".

There are two books about G.B.D., THE OLD CAUSE, and his DIARY. Harvard University library has some of his papers in its archives, as does the British Museum. G.B.D. held many ploitical positions and kept copious notes on political maneuvering.

His title at death was Lord Melcombe of Melcombe Regis: he was Lord Lieutenant of Somerset: no chlidren

Eastbury, which he occupied from 1721, cost 140,000 pounds and took 22 years to build. At this time, an "ample living" was about 350 pounds a year. The house frontage was 600', with a Doric portico 46' high and 62' broad. Thousands of acres surrounded it. The vista was 3/4 of a mile long.

Thanks so much for the bibliofind.com advice. I have used it extensively.
Aside from The Old Cause and the Dodington Diary, other resources I have found include:

Patron and Place-Hunter: George Bubb Dodington - This was a bio written by Lloyd Sanders in 1919. Somewhat complete, but written in an arcane Victorian tongue,
so not the most "reader-friendly" book. (and good luck finding a copy)

Hellfire Clubs - This is fairly modern book that traces the evolution of Londons infamous Hellfire Club (of which your dear ancestor was a card-carrying
member) It was written by Geoffrey Ashe and is currently available in trade paperback.

I was able to find a copy of The Old Cause which has proven to be a valuable resource (thanks), and a 1784 edition of his diary. I have been reading it so much
that I decided to order an 1828 edition to handle and preserve the 1784 edition. I was also able to locate a 1746 signature of GBD on bibliofind.com which I purchased for $25.

He was certainly an interesting figure. Were you aware of the role he played in the suppression of the Jacobite rebellion of 1745-46? He was a spy in the circle of Allesandro Albani (although I am not sure who was pulling who's strings) and is credited by some of alerting the crown of the activities of Bonnie Prince Charlie. He was also a very Machiavellian figure in the "shadow court" of Frederick Prince of
Wales (son of George II and heir apparent until his death in 1751). I am certain that he would have been a much better known person had Fred taken the throne.
But I will save that story for the book!
